A Few Neighborhoods Where I Work:

The Museum District

On the eastern edge of the Museum District, two Richmond landmarks set the tone: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Historical Society. With their mix of modern lines and timeless architecture, they anchor the neighborhood and draw visitors from across the city and well beyond.

The Museum District shares much of its character with The Fan — in fact, they share the same northern and eastern borders (though Main Street becomes Ellwood Avenue once it crosses Boulevard). On the western side, I-195 runs right alongside the neighborhood, making it easy to spot from the road.

What makes the Museum District stand out is its balance — fewer rental properties than The Fan, and a real mix of generations. You’ll find young families, retirees, and everyone in between, all connected by a similar lifestyle: walking to restaurants, biking to get around, and enjoying the energy of a socially active neighborhood.

And let’s not forget its southern neighbor — Carytown. With its shopping, restaurants, and nightlife just steps away, Museum District residents truly get the best of both worlds.

Northside

Head just north of The Fan and Museum District, past the bustle of Boulevard and The Diamond, and you’ll find Richmond’s historic Northside — a collection of tree-lined neighborhoods that feel like a step back in time. Areas like Bellevue, Ginter Park, and Lakeside offer larger yards, more breathing room, and plenty of opportunities for buyers dreaming of a historic renovation.

Northside has the same charm as Richmond’s other historic districts, but with its own flavor: locally owned shops, cafés, and restaurants that turn a Saturday stroll into an adventure. Lakeside Avenue is a treasure hunt of antiques, bargains, and collectibles, and no weekend is complete without a stop at the Lakeside Farmers Market (after grabbing hot scones and locally roasted Blanchard’s coffee from Up All Night Bakery of course).

Outdoor space is where Northside really shines — from the nationally recognized Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to the winding mountain-bike trails of Bryan Park, it’s a neighborhood where gardens, green space, and community meet.

The Fan

Bordered by Belvidere to the east and Boulevard to the west, The Fan is one of Richmond’s most iconic neighborhoods. Anchored by Virginia Commonwealth University and the historic stretch of Monument Avenue, The Fan blends academic energy with the charm of locally owned restaurants, funky shops, and tree-lined streets. The neighborhood extends north to Grace Street and south to Main, spreading out in the distinctive fan shape that inspired its name.

Life in The Fan plays out on its sidewalks — students walking to class, neighbors heading to markets and cafés, and cyclists navigating the two-lane streets. Food is part of the culture here, with longtime institutions like Bamboo Café (a neighborhood classic for sandwiches and no-frills good vibes), Helen’s (a retro spot with craft cocktails and a loyal following), and Joe’s Inn (a Richmond institution known for its massive portions and cozy booths) all within walking distance.

The Fan’s personality shines brightest during the holidays, especially Halloween, when Hanover Avenue transforms into a citywide destination. Recognized nationally as one of the top five Halloween events, the night is packed with elaborate decorations, spooky fun, and treats for every age. It’s a tradition that brings out not only the kids but anyone who’s young at heart.
